A lot can be said (and is being said) about the branding machine of Microsoft. But we can all agree on one thing, they look outdated, have a corporate and conservative feel and most importantly – especially with the Apple and Google lurking around the corner – it seems that they are trying to hard to become something that they’re not. However, if you look what their R&D department has spurred out lately, you would imagine that they would improve on their branding as well. What many agencies take months to do, it took Canada-based design student Andrew Kim just 3 days to come up with this brilliant rebranding strategy for Microsoft where he introduces ‘The Slate’ as the basis for the new Microsoft brand and bringing it one step further to the future, almost becoming science-fiction. If only they would take his advice… imagine the street creds they would get.
A quick scroll through the app store reveals tons of garbage shit apps that for some reason have the functionalities you’re looking for, but are either not intuitive or look plain fugly. Especially in this day and age it is essential for developers to differentiate themselves design and user interactivity-wise and it’s those apps that win on the marketplace.
Working in high-tech may sound dull to many people. Programming, coding, development, C+, Javascript, jQuery,Rails, Ruby, Web-development etc. probably sound like nerd-jargon to you, but it pretty much gives you a general summary of what Google is all about from a technical aspect. Other than Google, many high-tech companies – especially in the social media scene – maintains some of the most creative, if not, the sexiest offices I’ve ever seen. Take this 12.000 square meters Google office in Zurich, Switzerland for example. The creative minds behind this, Camenzind Evolution, delivered this gorgeous, very playful, working environment for the tech-nerds to roam freely, both psychically and mentally. I’m not going to explain what Poler do only that they make incredible awesome stuff. With quality goods ranging from simple tee’s to tents, from backpacks to napsacks, they know how to appeal to the common adventurer looking for high-standard affordable outdoor gear. To get an impression of Poler, check out the video they made featuring some of their team riders snowboarding on Mt. Baker using a super-8 film camera. Pinterest is a simple concept that is very closely related to what Tumblr offers to its users. The idea is quite the same other than instead having a single page to share your visuals, you can create several pinboards that is focussed on a single subject. Pinterest simply allows its users to organize and share everything they find on the web for all kinds of purposes. Maybe you’re just a visual-whore looking to gather all the hipster images that the web has to offer or you’re planning your wedding but have a hard time to find inspiration. Redecorating your room? Pinterest may provide you with all the furniture, patterns and accessoires you were looking for. It can even help you with your personal styling if you know your way around the handy tool.

If there’s one thing that a retail store, shop, coffee or lunch room can make me fall in love with, that would be branding. Bravo Company was assigned to brand the Five & Dime Eatery in Singapore. They came up with a simple idea that refers to the US coin and a variety store that sold everything for 5 or 10 cents. In conjunction with some low-priced items that fit the positioning, they managed to give the eatery a certain degree of class but still keeping it simple and practical.
